Read John 3:1-21
By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
-Ephesians 2:8 (NRSV)

THE train stopped at the station, waiting for a signal to continue. I looked out the window at a village scene. A cow was tied to a tree, shaking its head to get free from the grip of the rope. The struggle continued, and I found the scene troubling. My eyes were fixed on the sight until the train started moving. The cow could not free itself from the bondage of the rope by its own efforts; external help would be necessary.
The cow struggling against its bonds reminded me of my life 30 years ago. I had many questions about life and death. What is the truth? How can I be delivered from the insecurity and uncertainty of life? I went from people to places to get answers to my questions. I did whatever I could in my own strength, but my efforts were futile.
The Bible tells us that Nicodemus had questions too. Even though he was a leader of the Jews, he could not understand some things. He went to Jesus for answers. I am grateful that finally a day came when someone shared the good news of the Bible with me. The veil over my eyes suddenly was lifted, and I understood the meaning of life in Christ. Knowing Christ has given me the answers to my questions.

Prayer: O God, thank you for giving us answers and understanding through your word in the Bible. Help us to lead others to you by sharing the good news of Christ. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: God sets us free from sin’s hold.
