JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – On the day that he made history, Barack Obama got some heartfelt praise from Nelson Mandela.
The anti-apartheid icon said Obama’s inauguration in Washington has inspired the same sense of hope the world felt when South Africa threw off apartheid and elected its first black president — Mandela himself.
Mandela, in a letter released shortly after Obama took the oath of office Tuesday, said people around the world were inspired by his inauguration in 1994 to believe that “injustice can be overcome.” And he says Obama’s presidency offers a similar hope.
“Your election to this high office has inspired people as few other events in recent times have done,” Mandela wrote. “Amongst many around the world a sense of hopelessness had set in as so many problems remain unresolved and seemingly incapable of being resolved. You, Mister President, have brought a new voice of hope that these problems can be addressed and that we can in fact change the world and make of it a better place.”

The Weight of Objects
In life, we tend to have an easier time acquiring possessions than we do getting rid of them. Just as we harbor emotional baggage that is difficult to let go of, our lives can tend to be filled with material objects that we may feel compelled to hold on to. Most people are not conscious of how much they own and how many of their possessions are no longer adding value to their life. They fiercely hold on to material objects because this makes them feel secure or comfortable. While it’s true that the ownership of “stuff” can make you feel good for awhile, it seldom satisfies the deep inner longings that nearly everyone has for fulfillment and satisfaction. It is only when we are ready to let go of our baggage and be vulnerable that it becomes possible to recognize the emotional hold that our possessions can have on us.

A little girl asked her father: “How did the human race appear?” The father answered, “God made Adam and Eve; they had children; and so was all mankind made.”
Two days later the girl asked her mother the same question. The mother answered, “Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved.”
The confused girl returned to her father and said, “Dad, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Mum said they developed from monkeys?”

An old prospector wandered into a small town where he was accosted by
a loud, obnoxious and quite drunken cowboy. The cowboy pointed his
six-shooters in the old miner’s direction and asked, “Old man, do you
know how to dance?”
“Nope,” the prospector replied.
“Maybe you’d better learn,” said the cowpuncher. Hot lead kicked up
dust around the old man’s feet and he began to dance.
Soon, however, the guns were empty. Now the old prospector reached
into his saddlebag and pulled out a sawed-off shotgun.
