Our Hair, Our Story

For as far back as time can tell, Black hair has long had the power to set trends and reflect societal attitudes. As February concludes, it’s the perfect time to remember important people and events that shaped the lives of African-Americans. Hairstyles have been interwoven into that history and it continues to evolve.
Here is a look at some of the key events and people who shaped the Black hair story in America.

 

1400’s
Europeans trade on the west coast of Africa with people wearing elaborate hairstyles, including braids, twists and intricate headdresses.

1619
The first African slaves brought to Jamestown, Virginia. While many native languages, cultural practices and grooming traditions were lost, slaves fought to keep their identity and personal style alive.

1900 to 1910
Madame C.J. Walker develops a range of hair-care products for Black hair. She helps to popularize the press-and-curl style. Some criticize her for encouraging Black women to look White. Walker is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first self-made American woman millionaire, who neither inherited her money or married someone who was a millionaire.
