Michelle Obama easily outmatched Carla Bruni-Sarkozy today when they met in Strasbourg. Mrs. Obama wore a demure Thakoon coat with a hint of color in the cheery pink floral print while Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy stuck to her usual gray tones in a washed-out cropped sleeve coat that was very similar to some of the looks she has sported over the past year.

For her first meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, Mrs. Obama chose a simple color palette in dressy fabrics. Her black satin Jason Wu coat (not pictured) had a nice swing, and her black and white Isabel Toledo ensemble, layered with an Azzedine Alaia cardigan, has a discreet crinoline underneath for a little retro-volume. Oh, and she wore a new pulled-back hairstyle, too.

After two days of waving the flag for American designers, Michelle Obama stepped out in a funky argyle and sequin trimmed cardigan by the trendy Japanese designer Junya Watanabe for her appearance at the Royal Opera House. Of course, maintaining her ever-practical approach to fashion, Mrs. Obama wore the same Jimmy Choo pumps she featured at the inauguration.

Strolling through Strasbourg, France, both Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy chose pants for their weekend wardrobe. Mrs. Obama is wearing Azzedine Alaia for the second day in a row — a chic, leather trimmed jacket. Alaia is an expert tailor and the choice of this particular designer is a signal to the global fashion community that Mrs. Obama knows what she’s doing when it comes to clothes.

Observers likened the choice of this custom-made ivory tulle tweed Thakoon coat to a look Jackie Kennedy wore when she first visited Europe as First Lady. Mrs. Obama accessorized with two strands of pearls, which will also get mileage on this trip.

Mrs. Obama apparently changed into something a little more upbeat for her arrival in London. Here she wears a canary yellow Jason Wu dress under a black Michael Kors coat. The accessory is also familiar: an Azzedine Alaia belt — which her husband supposedly calls the “Star Wars belt.”
