Romans 10:8-11 (NRSV)But what does it say?
“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”
(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your
lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the
dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified,
and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one
who believes in him will be put to shame.”

OLD George was tough and independent and proud of it. He wore his defiance like
the shock of startlingly silver hair he combed back from his forehead. We both
loved baseball, especially the hard-nosed old-timers who played the game. I
attended church with his wife, Della, who pleaded with me to speak to George
about his soul. The one time I brought up the subject, a heavy silence filled
the darkened room as the ballgame played on the radio and his cigarette glowed
in the dark. So I just stayed friends with old George and prayed for him.

The following summer we watched the All-Star game on the television in his
hospital room. Hard coughs came from deep in his damaged lungs. Unexpectedly,
he raised himself on one elbow and asked, “Are those things you’ve told me about
Jesus true?”
. “Yes, George,” I said, “absolutely, undeniably true.” And from his heart
emerged these two simple words: “I believe.” A few days later he stepped into
eternity. Now, as I watch the All-Star game each year, I remember my
baseball-watching friend who came to belief late in his life.PRAYER: God, help us to show others the way to you. Amen.THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
