Jamaican-born scientist making strides in nerve research

.

Who would have thought that a little girl from Darliston in Westmoreland would turn out to be a First World scientist who may have discovered a new way to repair damaged nerves?

.

Now living in Canada, Jamaican-born Dr Patrice Smith and her colleagues at Harvard have discovered a way to repair damaged nerves by allowing the adult brain to respond to repair signals that are induced after injury.

.

Dr Smith explained to Flair in an interview, that as we get older, we

Hello world, it is with profound sadness that I share the fact that our esteemed friend, Professor Rex Nettleford passed away on February 2nd…..
.

Professor Ralston Milton Rex Nettleford (February 3, 1933 - February 2, 2010) by The University of the West Indies.

.

PROFESSOR Rex Nettleford, one of Jamaica’s brightest sons and a cultural icon, died in the George Washington University Intensive Care Unit last night, six days after he collapsed in his hotel room in Washington and four hours before his 77th birthday.
.
Nettleford, who suffered a massive heart attack, was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit and placed on life support. He never regained consciousness and finally passed at 8:00 pm.
.
Nettleford… was an international icon and quintessential Caribbean man.
He was in the US capital to participate in a fund-raising gala for the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he was vice-chancellor emeritus.
.
Last night, a medical report signed by Dr Christopher Junker of George Washington University said that the life support was terminated in keeping with Professor Nettleford’s wishes.
.
“Mr Nettleford has been under our care at the George Washington University Intensive Care Unit for catastrophic brain injury following a cardiac arrest,” Dr Junker said. “After

There is nobody like a Jamaican, Nobody! Sometimes it’s difficult to determine where someone comes from. Drop us into the vast mosaic of the peoples of the world and try to figure out who is who.

.

“Him is from China, no, is Japanese, but him could be Korean still.” The same goes for people from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana. We just can’t tell them apart. Not so with Jamaicans though, who stand out and stick out like beacons in the night. Foreigners know us in a flash, and we can identify each other from way across the street. We are so distinct that other people try to walk, talk and act like us.

.

I’m so amused when I encounter Americans, Europeans, Japanese, [Madam Cleo, or Ron] trying to act Jamaican. “Hey mon, wha hoppening mon, eberyting irie?” I usually reply in my most proper English. If they are Japanese, I say, “Sukiyaki, Sayonara, Sony, Toyota Mitsubishi.” Just to keep them guessing.

OUT  OF  MANY  ONE  PEOPLE!

.

“So you speak Japanese?”

.

“Ah so, Nissan, Sanyo, Toyota Tercel..”

.

But what makes us so different from other people? First it’s the walk, nobody walks like us. People in foreign walk briskly, head straight, arms swinging almost in military fashion, with a stride and purpose like they’re going somewhere. Not us though, who saunter with a rhythm that is almost slow motion. No hurry, no scurry, no flurry, no rushy rushy, just cool, with a bop and rhythm that could be put to music. Years ago we used to call it bop. For some it’s natural while others practiced it.

Like most teachers, Shikira Chang keeps busy by grading papers and helping her students study for exams, according to a report by Micaela Hood on the Miami Herald website.

Summer is here now but Chang said she does not plan on kicking back and taking it easy.

Instead, the 29-year-old will dedicate her time to helping out children living in a country close to her heart.

A teacher at Miramar High School, Chang is the founder of Kira Cares, an organisation
