  The Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought.

.
Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.
Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time…

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.  ’No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks.  I’ll wait till we get to base.’

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty  dollar bill.  ’Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.’

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like best - beef or chicken?’

Ussain Bolt Celebrating by Sangre de Chivas!.

World record holder Usain Bolt has shattered the world record on the first anniversary of when he set it in Beijing , China.  Bolt ran a superb 9.58 to win, removing the 9.69 record he set last year at the Olympic games. This the third world record Bolt has set in the 100m.

American Tyson Gay was second while Bolt’s Jamaican team mate Asafa Powell was third in the final, which ended today’s track events at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany.   

.

Gay ran 9.71 to place second setting a new national record for the US, while Powell ran 9.84 to get the bronze medal. Both athletes have given Jamaica its first two medals at this World Championships.

Both athletes celebrated with dance moves inside the stadium while the crowd cheered.

Friends, family, and fans gathered at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the life of Michael Jackson.

 

Mariah Carey re-teamed with Trey Lorenz for a rousing duet of the Jackson 5 classic “I’ll Be There.” The duo originally performed the song in 1992 during Mariah’s award-winning “MTV Unplugged” appearance.

 

Lionel Richie serenaded the packed house with a gospel-infused number.

NEW YORK – Fireworks lit the night sky above New York with a kaleidoscope of colors shooting 1,000 feet into the air on an Independence Day that began with the Statue of Liberty’s crown opening to the public for the first time since Sept. 11, 2001.

It was the nation’s biggest fireworks display, with more than 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploding Saturday over a mile-and-a-half of the Hudson River, a new vantage point for New York’s festivities. Millions of spectators watched from both sides of the river.
