At first it sounded like a Thanksgiving story, but the more I
reflected on it, the more appropriate it seemed for any time of the
year. The way I heard it, the story went like this:
.
Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a
fun assignment — to draw a picture of something for which they were
thankful.
.
Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but
still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other
traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would
be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.
.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different
kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, frail and
unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to Read More

Redo: Great Flavors, Fewer Calories

Oh boy—here come those grand summer barbeques, and all the tasty treats that go with them. But if you’re a hard-core griller, are you doomed to put on weight during the summer months, or can you have your burger and eat it too?
Here, for example, are 2 possible BBQ platters that will have distinctly different effects on a person’s weight:
BBQ Plate - Choice # 1:
1 chicken drumstick, fried
1 small bag of potato chips, fried
1 hamburger (85 percent lean) with 1 tablespoon of regular mayo on a plain bun

Prime Minister Bruce Golding ’suffered’ three little children to come unto him and he received them at Jamaica House yesterday.
The prime minister extended the invitation to the three primary-school students after the heart-tugging letters they wrote to him were the focus of The Gleaner’s lead story on Saturday, April 11.
The tear-jerking missives were penned by two third-grade students and a sixth-grader. The letters were published earlier this month in The Gleaner’s weekly publication, the Children’s Own, which is distributed to primary, all-age and preparatory schools across the country.

Don’t tell me you can’t go home.
I just came back from there.
My phone rang early last Saturday morning.
“Hey, did you see in the paper that 466 is
having a house sale?” my brother asked.
“No, are they really?”
“Yes. I think we’re going down later just
walk through it.”
466 is the house number of the home we lived
in when I was growing up. I lived in a
community that always stayed close to where
you were born. Families rarely moved away
back then. That is until the kids graduated
high school. Then it appears that most
of my class mates left the area.

Here are some ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day free of romantic pressure:
…
Don’t limit yourself to tradition. No matter how many ads you see for diamond jewelry or fancy cologne, despite how many boxes of chocolate and bottles of wine you walk past in the stores, nothing says that you have to buy traditional Valentine’s Day products to have a romantic holiday. By the same token, there’s no reason you can’t celebrate a fulfilling holiday without investing in expensive traditional Valentine’s Day experiences like eating out and taking trips. Be creative. If you have an idea that doesn’t fit the mold of what’s traditionally considered romantic, go ahead and pursue it anyway. For example, maybe you and your spouse are looking forward to choosing materials for a home improvement project you plan to work on together. In that case, you both might actually enjoy spending Valentine’s Day shopping at hardware store, however unromantic that might seem to others.
