Brain Exercise
===============
.
Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it
often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled
thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use
your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to
think and learn will deteriorate.
.
Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more
productivity out of the old gray matter.
.
1. Minimize Television Watching - This is a hard sell. People
love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more
often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t
use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like
having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health
benefits of exercise.
.
Don’t you feel drained after a couple hours of TV? Your eyes are
sore and tired from being focused on the light box for so long.
You don’t even have the energy to read a book.
.
When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If
you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your
friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation.
All of these things use your mind more than television and allow
you to relax.
.
2. Exercise - I used to think that I’d learn more by not
exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I
realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater
learning because it improves productivity during the time
afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave
of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate
more easily.
.

.
3. Read Challenging Books - Many people like to read popular
suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally
stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing
ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a
classic novel can change your view of the world and will make
you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to
look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of
dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and
you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.
.
Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll
find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The
challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any
tacky suspense-thriller.
.
4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise - Nothing makes it harder to
concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated
if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you

Whirlwind
==========
.
I have no idea why I am sitting here about to tell the world
about my situation, but maybe it will help someone.
.
A little over a year ago I found myself back home, working two
jobs, single, feeling alone and pregnant.
.
Now the reason for me being back home was so that I could save
some money so that I might be able to buy my first home. I was
working two jobs so that I could pay my current bills off.
.
I also wanted to start a new career. I was a nail tech and an
intake person. I was 28 years old, a single woman longing to be
married but finding myself alone and pregnant which I thought
would never happen.
.
My mother and step-father gave me the option to move in for one
year so that I could save a little faster. Well my year had
come to a close and it was time to go, if you know what I mean.
.
One day I felt like I was sitting in a chair in the middle of
the room and looking above only to see the whirlwind of my
problems going around me. I was like “wow if I get pulled up
into this mess I’d just keel over.” Well you know what happened
next. Our words do have power because all of a sudden it seems
as though I became trapped in this whirlwind.
.
I then began to give up until I remembered that God said that we
should cast all of our worries unto Him, so I began to pray a
prayer with all my heart. With faith I believed that He would
fix all of this, but I didn’t quite know how.
.
The next day while working at the nail shop around 5 p.m.,
I began to tell a client of mine about my situation. After
crying all over myself at the end of her appointment, she gave
me a big hug and said that I was strong and everything would
work itself out. Now that was the last thing that I wanted to
hear. I was in trouble and needed major help.
.
So by the end of my shift around 10 p.m. that client of mine who

At one time, Bangkok television aired the American situation comedy
LaVerne and Shirley. For whatever reason, officials there believed
that a disclaimer was necessary for the Thailand audience, so this
subtitle was added to each show: “The two women depicted in the
following episode are from an insane asylum.”
.
Personally, I’m thankful there is a little silliness in the world.
And I don’t mind not acting like everybody else. Like the
“irrepressible” educator and speaker Leo Buscaglia once said: “I don’t
mind if people think I’m crazy. In fact, I think it’s great! It
gives me tremendous latitude for behavior.”
.
Buscaglia knew how to laugh. And I think knowing how to laugh and
have fun is an important part of living.
.
Someone asked me what I do for fun. I felt I should answer with
something others enjoy, like golf or skiing. But my idea of fun is
not usually associated with entertainment and recreation. It is more
about squeezing as much enjoyment into every day as I can. Instead
of looking for something fun to do, I try to make whatever I do a
little more fun. And if I can’t always do things I enjoy, I can
learn to enjoy more of the things I do.
.
I like the word “enjoyment” because it has “joy” inside of it. So
does the word “rejoice.” And rejoicing is a way to find enjoyment of
life.
.
Speaking of Leo Buscaglia, he used to tell a story about his mother
and their “misery dinner.” It was the night after his father came
home and said it looked as if he would have to go into bankruptcy
because his partner had absconded with their firm’s funds. His
mother’s response was to sell some of her jewelry to buy food enough
for a grand feast. At first, other members of the family scolded her
for it. But she told them that “the time for joy is now, when we

I once read that an ordinance in one of America’s major cities
forbids “walking about aimlessly, with no apparent purpose,
lingering, hanging around, lagging behind, idly spending time,
delaying, sauntering and moving slowly about.”
..
I can’t tell you how disturbed I felt. Some of my best days are
spent like that.
..
But then, I don’t want my whole life to be basically described as
having “no apparent purpose…lagging behind…idly spending
time…delaying” and generally moving about aimlessly. On the other
hand, neither do I want to take myself too seriously. An occasional
day spent doing next to nothing sounds perfectly fine.
..
My problem is that I am usually busy. I schedule tightly and work
long hours. I plan my time and make lists.
..
But it would be a mistake to believe that, just because I am doing
many things, I am necessarily doing the right things. Or, perhaps,
the BEST things. At least if I’m busy, I want to stay busy at things
that matter.
..
News commentator Dan Rather asked himself a vital question several
times a day. Largely because of this one question, he became one of
America’s leading journalists. Rather wrote the question on three
slips of paper. He kept one in his billfold, one in his pocket, and

Peter Drucker once said, “It is easier to come up with new ideas than it is to…let go of the old ones.” I couldn’t agree more! That comfort zone is…well, pretty comforting for all of us.

Plato said that work should be play. Some airline employees have taken his injunction seriously. After landing, one flight attendant announced, “Thank you for flying Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride.” There’s a flight attendant who knows how to turn her work into play.
She may have been the same one who, as the passengers disembarked from the aircraft, announced, “Last one off the plane must clean it.”
A British insurance agent has fun with the accident reports he reads from some of his clients. Like the one who wrote: “I started to slow down but the traffic was more
