I once read that an ordinance in one of America’s major cities
forbids “walking about aimlessly, with no apparent purpose,
lingering, hanging around, lagging behind, idly spending time,
delaying, sauntering and moving slowly about.”
..
I can’t tell you how disturbed I felt. Some of my best days are
spent like that.
..
But then, I don’t want my whole life to be basically described as
having “no apparent purpose…lagging behind…idly spending
time…delaying” and generally moving about aimlessly. On the other
hand, neither do I want to take myself too seriously. An occasional
day spent doing next to nothing sounds perfectly fine.
..
My problem is that I am usually busy. I schedule tightly and work
long hours. I plan my time and make lists.
..
But it would be a mistake to believe that, just because I am doing
many things, I am necessarily doing the right things. Or, perhaps,
the BEST things. At least if I’m busy, I want to stay busy at things
that matter.

News commentator Dan Rather asked himself a vital question several
times a day. Largely because of this one question, he became one of
America’s leading journalists. Rather wrote the question on three
slips of paper. He kept one in his billfold, one in his pocket, and

Teacher starts group for Jamaican children

.
Like most teachers, Shikira Chang keeps busy by grading papers and helping her students study for exams, according to a report by Micaela Hood on the Miami Herald website.
Summer is here now but Chang said she does not plan on kicking back and taking it easy.
Instead, the 29-year-old will dedicate her time to helping out children living in a country close to her heart.
A teacher at Miramar High School, Chang is the founder of Kira Cares, an organisation

Many Jamaicans living in Canada are looking for new investment opportunities on the island, in a bid to help strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
“What Jamaicans want to do is own some of Jamaica, so Jamaicans who have lived abroad are thinking now of being owners and collaborating with Jamaicans on new projects,” said Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, president of the Canadian Diaspora Association.
One of the areas being targeted, Ffolkes Abrahams said, is tourism, which, in her opinion, needs diversification. Possible areas of expansion are health tourism and ecotourism.

Ffolkes Abrahams disclosed that a contingent had arrived in the island ahead of Canadian

In the wake of a weakened banana industry, farmers are being retrained.
Workshops feature career counselling, motivational speeches and try-a-skill exercises where participants engage in housekeeping, construction and agricultural applications.
Vocational and skills training is being provided through existing programmes at HEART Trust/NTA and partner institutions for former farmers who are in need of new areas of earning.
The 15-month project began in October 2008 and will end in December 2009, at a cost of 354,700 euros, funded by the European Union and HEART Trust/NTA.
Participants will be required to pass a grade-nine level test that will concentrate on general knowledge, practical mathematics and English language.

THE EMPTY EGG

Eight-year-old Steven was mentally retarded and had many
health problems. His health appeared to be growing worse ever
daily. His teacher was concerned his classmates might stop
identifying with him and loving him as they became more aware
of his differences.
..
In April, the teacher asked the class to put together one
plastic Easter egg filled with a small object representing new
life in the Spring. Thinking Steven might not understand (and
not wanting to embarrass him), the teacher had each child
place their egg on her desk so that she could open each one
individually. She needn’t have worried.
