  The Sack Lunches
.
I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought.

.
Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

.
‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.
Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan

.
After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time…

.
As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.  ’No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks.  I’ll wait till we get to base.’

.
His friend agreed.

.
I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty  dollar bill.  ’Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.’

.
Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like best - beef or chicken?’
‘Chicken,’ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went

I know He is the Beginning, so why do I worry about the end?
I know He is the Creator, so why do I wonder who will destroy?

.

I know He has forgiven me, so why can’t I forgive myself?
I know He is the Healer, so why do I speak of sickness?

.

I know He can do all things, so why do I say I can’t?
I know He will protect me, so why do I fear?

.

I know He will supply all my needs, so why can’t I wait?
I know He is my strength and my salvation, so why do I feel weak?

.

I know that everything and everyone has a season, so why when someone’s season is

None of you have children/grandchildren who “sag” their pants but maybe you know of someone who does.  This would be a good thing to read at a Youth Program.

.

Letter from a college student

The other day, a friend of mine was visiting me in the lobby of my dorm just to chat while her laundry was drying. As we were chatting, two young freshmen came by. One of the boys wanted to ‘talk’ to my friend (as in date). She asked him how old they were, and both of the boys replied 18. My friend and I both laughed because we are both 22 years old. After my friend left, the young men were still hanging around and one wanted to know how he could gain her interest.

The first thing I told him to do was to pull up his pants! He asked why, and then he said “I liked saggin’ my pants”. I told them to come over to my computer and spell the word saggin’. Then I told him to write the word saggin’ backwards.

There are few things in this life more difficult to experience than
the loss of one’s child. Jim Wallis, in WHO SPEAKS FOR GOD tells about
a sad and terrifying incident that occurred during the tragic war in
Sarajevo not too many years back. A reporter who was covering the
violence in the middle of the city saw a little girl fatally shot by a
sniper.

The reporter threw down his pad and pencil and rushed to the aid of a

Santiago: Word in the Hand - Diabetes365 - Oct. 25, 2007 by Manny Hernandez.

At first it sounded like a Thanksgiving story, but the more I
reflected on it, the more appropriate it seemed for any time of the
year. The way I heard it, the story went like this:

.

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a
fun assignment — to draw a picture of something for which they were
thankful.

.

Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but
still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other
traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would
be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.

.

But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different
kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, frail and
unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to
