Born Jamaican - By Tony Robinson

There is nobody like a Jamaican, Nobody! Sometimes it’s difficult to determine where someone comes from. Drop us into the vast mosaic of the peoples of the world and try to figure out who is who.

.

“Him is from China, no, is Japanese, but him could be Korean still.” The same goes for people from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana. We just can’t tell them apart. Not so with Jamaicans though, who stand out and stick out like beacons in the night. Foreigners know us in a flash, and we can identify each other from way across the street. We are so distinct that other people try to walk, talk and act like us.

.

I’m so amused when I encounter Americans, Europeans, Japanese, [Madam Cleo, or Ron] trying to act Jamaican. “Hey mon, wha hoppening mon, eberyting irie?” I usually reply in my most proper English. If they are Japanese, I say, “Sukiyaki, Sayonara, Sony, Toyota Mitsubishi.” Just to keep them guessing.

OUT  OF  MANY  ONE  PEOPLE!

.

“So you speak Japanese?”

.

“Ah so, Nissan, Sanyo, Toyota Tercel..”

.

But what makes us so different from other people? First it’s the walk, nobody walks like us. People in foreign walk briskly, head straight, arms swinging almost in military fashion, with a stride and purpose like they’re going somewhere. Not us though, who saunter with a rhythm that is almost slow motion. No hurry, no scurry, no flurry, no rushy rushy, just cool, with a bop and rhythm that could be put to music. Years ago we used to call it bop. For some it’s natural while others practiced it.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. –Colossians 3:12-14

In this book under the chapter “American Dream”  and in paragraph 13 you will find
“The other day Mrs. King and I spent about ten days down in Jamaica.  I’d gone down to deliver the commencement address at the University of the West Indies. I always love to go to that great island which I consider the most beautiful island in all the world. The government prevailed upon us to be their guests and spend some time and try to get a little rest while there on the speaking tour. And so for those days we traveled all over Jamaica. And over and over again I was impressed by one thing. Here you have people from many national backgrounds: Chinese, Indians, so-called

Kiwanis president speaks on global issues, volunteerism

Kiwanis International President Donald Canaday was in the island recently to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Kiwanis in Jamaica, which coincided with the 94th anniversary of Kiwanis International. Jamaica comprises four Kiwanis divisions, 58 clubs and 2,400 members.

..

Canaday, a 38-year veteran Kiwanian, was elected president at the 93rd annual International Convention in Orlando, Florida, in June 2008, to serve a one-year term. The highlight of his visit to the island was the induction of 75 new members during a ceremony at the Hilton Kingston hotel last Thursday. Associate Editor Byron Buckley spoke to Canaday before the start of the ceremony.

……

Why are you in Jamaica?

I am here to celebrate with the Kiwanians of Jamaica. They are a great bunch of men and women who wear the pin of Kiwanis proudly and they serve those who are in need. We are hoping to grow.
